Traveling with a toddler isn't always easy, but if there is one place that's perfect for family-friendly attractions and an overall relaxing vibe for you and your little one, it'd be Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean's very own exclusive private island.
Perfect Day at CocoCay has always been a special place to visit in the Bahamas, but in 2020, the island completed a huge refresh, with the introduction of even more attractions, making it one of the most kid-friendly vacations you'll find (it's a great space for adults, too).
Here are some tips for traveling with a toddler to this beautiful Caribbean vacation destination.
Wondering how to travel with a toddler and leave the stress and mess at home? Traveling with a toddler goes smoothly for parents when they keep in mind their child's unique sleep needs, preferences, and general willingness to go with the flow. For example, if your child needs to be kept on their strict nap and bedtime schedule in order to be a happy camper (been there!), you'll want to ensure that you can carve out time during the day for a quiet rest in the pack and play. Cruise can make great kid-friendly vacations for families. If you can swing it, I highly recommend reserving one of Royal Caribbean's many family-designed staterooms and suites in order to give your child a quiet, peaceful space for sleeping, while the rest of the family enjoys some quiet time in another part of the room.
If your child can roll with a disrupted schedule and loves nothing more than experiencing new things, a cruise is also great. Engage your child's senses with a full slate of new experiences every day. Not only is there so much to explore inside and outside the cruise ship (elevators and chandeliers can be fascinating for toddlers!), there are also new foods to try, new friendly faces to greet and fun places to play and splash around.
Perfect Day at CocoCay is such a special family destination, with the laughs and splashes of kids greeting you practically the minute you step off your cruise ship.
Traveling with a toddler to the Caribbeanis a breeze on this dazzling vacation island. Starting with your complimentary tram shuttle (a super fun toddler-friendly "attraction" in its own right), you can spend more of your time relaxing on the beach and in the water and less time schlepping your kid and all your tot accessories around the island. There are also complimentary beach strollers available for your use when you get here, adding to the laid-back island vibe.
Toddlers in swim diapers can use most of the pools and swim in the ocean at Perfect Day at CocoCay. The beaches feature clean powdery white sand with plenty of shade from the palm trees — perfect for letting your little one crawl or toddle around without burning their precious feet. They also come fully stocked with complimentary life jackets stationed at every beach, so you won't have to worry about packing an extra in your suitcase..
When it's nap time (if your kid is open to it), snag a hammock and rock your baby to sleep with the gentle sea breezes washing over you. Beach naps were always one of my favorite things to do at the beach when my kids were little, and so this is one of my favorite tips for traveling with a toddler without having to return to your cabin midday.
Perfect Day at CocoCay has plenty of dining options for all palates. One of the easiest ways to feed little appetites is to head to one of the buffets, Chill Grill or Skipper's Grill, and fix a simple beach lunch with fresh fruit, grilled barbecue bites, and don't forget the ice cream! Complimentary soft serve ice cream is a must for cooling off after splashing around in the ocean.
And when your toddler has had enough beach time, or you just need a break and want to snooze on the beach yourself, the ship is just a short walk (or tram ride) away, and the onboard nursery and childcare facilities at Adventure Ocean remain open while the ship is in port. (Yes, getting a little "time off" is the perfect way to ensure kid-friendly vacations are also parent-friendly vacations!)
Though your toddler might be happy to spend the entire day at the beach (and that'd be a perfect day in itself for your family), there are some other great attractions and activities at Perfect Day at CocoCay ideal for any age.
Many people associate this private Caribbean island with the larger-than-life, jaw-dropping water park attractions and zip lines, and for good reason. That is a big part of this island — but that's not all. Perfect Day also offers fun spaces specifically tailored to younger children. In fact, you can do some things here that you won't find anywhere else.
Shortly after you get off the ship, you'll be welcomed into Captain Jill's Galleon, a splashy, fun pirate ship just the right size for your = to play with water cannons, a small slide and sprayers. For water-loving kiddos, this is pure entertainment.
A little farther down the path, you'll arrive at Splashaway Bay aqua park, a larger spray and splash area with a swinging bridge waterslide, water cannons, fountains, pools, whirlpools and a drench bucket. This park is fit for most ages, as long as your child is potty trained and not in diapers. Allow your child to get their feet wet and experiment with different sprays. They'll have fun watching the big kids get soaked when the drench bucket tips!
Ready to make your own waves? Head to Oasis Lagoon, a chill space for children to cool down. The lagoon, which is the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean, features a sloping entry, so young children can take their time getting acclimated. In the afternoon, unwind and recharge poolside or on one of the in-water loungers. And let's be honest — no kid-friendly vacations in the sunshine would be complete without a kid-friendly swimming pool!
For the ultimate family bonding experience, book your own private cabana. There are options available offering different amenities and price points, from on the beach to an overwater bungalow. With the latter, you'll enjoy butler service, a private living room and bathroom, a slide into the ocean, and an over-the-water hammock. My family had such a memorable day nibbling lobster and sipping champagne here on a recent trip to Perfect Day at CocoCay.
For your fearless toddler, check out the helium balloon. Unlike most hot air balloon experiences, the Up, Up and Away helium balloon experience, which is tethered to the ground and rises 450 feet up in the air, has no age limit restrictions, so you and your toddler get to take in a gorgeous seagull's-eye view of this sparkling Caribbean destination.
With a little planning and forethought, traveling with a toddler can be an amazing experience and an opportunity for your family to make memories that will last a lifetime.
