Celebration Travel: A Guide To Vacation Ideas

Celebrate Your Special Moments On A Cruise

By Cynthia J. Drake | Published on September 22, 2023

Though you never need an excuse to plan a cruise, having something to celebrate with a big trip just makes the experience that much more special. It's a popular trend, and for good reason. Chances are, you'll feel that celebratory spirit as soon as you set foot on your ship.

Whether you're celebrating a special birthday, anniversary, graduation, family reunion, wedding, honeymoon, or just celebrating yourself, this guide to celebration travel via cruise is guaranteed to help you commemorate your special moment in style.

Why Cruising Is A Great Option For Celebrating Your Special Occasion

A traditional celebration, whether it's a birthday, anniversary or another occasion, usually lasts just a few hours. Selecting a cruise as your celebration venue of choice means the party continues for the full length of your vacation. That means more time to celebrate, more time to reconnect, and more time to spend quality time with the people you love.

I have celebrated so many important moments of my life on a Royal Caribbean cruise, including my wedding, honeymoon, milestone birthdays and family reunions. Each experience was incredibly special for so many reasons.

The first thing I love about these kinds of celebrations is that rather than spending all of my time planning every last detail (I'm a bit Type A by nature and have a tendency to go overboard with my planning!), everything is already planned out for you on a cruise. All of your meals and activities are already waiting for you — all you have to do is show up and enjoy the party yourself.

During major celebrations, it can be difficult to make everyone feel like a valued guest. As the guest of honor or host, your focus may be pulled in so many different directions, sitting down and enjoying some one-on-one time with each guest usually isn't in the cards. Not the case on a cruise. Whether your celebration voyage is three or four nights or longer, you can be sure to make time to really enjoy the company of your guests without worrying about anything else.

Food plays such an important role in celebrations, too, and you would be hard-pressed to find the quality of food and service that you'll find on a cruise (at a price that everyone can afford) back home. Sitting down with your guests and enjoying not just one special meal but several will create so many special lifelong memories.
Finally, one of my favorite aspects of cruising, especially with larger groups, is the flexibility that allows everyone to find something unique that they enjoy. From enjoying pedicures at the onboard spa to surfing on the FlowRider, skydiving on the RipCord by iFly, or challenging each other to a rollicking bumper car experience, there are so many great ways for people to explore on their own, while also reuniting throughout the day.

How To Plan And Book Your Celebration Cruise

First things first: If you are hosting the celebration, be sure to collect everyone's contact information and connect to a Royal Caribbean Certified Vacation Planner or a trusted travel agent ahead of your trip. Booking everyone's accommodations together may unlock some great benefits, too, such as group discounts or other bonuses. You can work through an agent to ensure your rooms are located in the same area of the ship if that's your preference, or book it yourself at your own leisure.

When planning a cruise, think through your preferred itinerary carefully — which ports make the most sense for your cruise celebration? Keep in mind that the world is your oyster. Special occasions may even call for thinking outside of the Caribbean. Think of the epic experiences you can share on a cruise to the Greek Isles, Fiji, Alaska, the Panama Canal, or other far-flung destinations. You'll never forget your special anniversary when you spend it trekking on the massive glaciers of Alaska.

One of my main tips for celebration travel is to make sure you mention the occasion you're celebrating at the time of booking. Royal Caribbean loves hosting celebrations — and you may just find a special surprise when you board your ship. Birthdays, anniversaries, and honeymoons are frequently celebrated during an onboard dinner of your choice, usually with a special dessert and a tableside serenade by a team of waiters. Or, a bottle of champagne and a box of chocolates may be waiting for you in your stateroom. When you want to celebrate, these little gestures set cruising apart.

Planning to get married onboard a cruise? Royal Caribbean offers various wedding packages to help you say "I do" on your cruise, including providing a private venue for your ceremony or vow renewal, plus extras including champagne, breakfast in bed, and dinner at a specialty restaurant. You can even invite non-sailing guests to join you in the wedding festivities.

And that's only the beginning.

When you want to celebrate, these little gestures set cruising apart.

How To Make Your Celebration Travel Truly Epic

So you want to book a trip for a special occasion but don't know where to start. Whether you need some unique anniversary vacation ideas, tips for birthday weekend getaways, or graduation vacation ideas, here's how to make your celebration cruise really stand out.

When celebrating something special, splurge a little to make the moment one you'll never forget. Royal Caribbean does celebration travel right, and even offers a full menu of options for decorating the stateroom of the honored guest or guests to the nines. Party packages include magnetic door signs, mirror clings, hanging decorations and photo frames. Keep in mind that you don't have to order these decorations through the cruise line (you may want to tuck your own streamers and door decorations in your suitcase), but the advantage of ordering in advance is that the room will be decorated and waiting for the grand surprise when you and your family arrive. Want to go even further? Add on a special delivery of champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries — who wouldn't love that? Or, maybe your loved one would enjoy a special spa treatment, dinner at a specialty restaurant or an epic shore excursion (helicopter glacier tour, anyone?) — all easy yet incredibly thoughtful gifts! Other gifts can also be purchased in advance and delivered to a stateroom, making for some excellent birthday vacation ideas.

Celebrating with a big group on a cruise gives you access to things you may not think to include in an at-home party. The best part? These things are often included in your cruise fare. For example, hiring an event photographer may not be a part of your budget for your average birthday or anniversary celebration, and the services of onboard photographers are included as just a regular part of your cruise vacation. So, when you're celebrating something special, be sure to take advantage of this wonderful service. Gather your group together (be sure to give a heads-up in advance if you want to coordinate outfits or bring along any special props), and strike a pose. A souvenir photo from your trip makes a great take-home for the whole party.

For larger groups (or for really special occasions), you might want to reach out to Royal Caribbean in advance of your trip to inquire about renting out special event space or meeting rooms. There are plenty of packages to choose from that include options for food and beverage, with space for up to 400 people.

Cruising really takes the stress out of celebration planning, especially since you don't need to worry about coordinating everyone's accommodations, dining, and activities between the party plans. Likewise, smaller travel groups won't have a problem finding space on the ship to relax and unwind together, whether that's at a piano bar, karaoke night, afternoon trivia, or dancing at the club after hours. Get with your group in advance and plan your meet-up times. You don't want to miss your chance to become the reigning champions of '80s music trivia!

For your next anniversary, birthday, bachelor/bachelorette party, graduation, or any other event worthy of a big celebration, consider cruising as the ultimate party.
