Christ Church Cathedral. Port Stanley, Falkland Islands
A stroll through town will bring you face to face with the Christ Church Cathedral and the Whalebone Arch. In fact, it's kind of hard to miss this towering memorial: It was built from the jawbones of two blue whales in 1933 to commemorate 100 years of British administration in the Falklands. It stands tall outside of the most southerly Anglican cathedral in the world. Consecrated in 1892, it features beautiful stained-glass windows, a pipe organ that came all the way from Ireland, and a working bell tower.
Falkland Island, Stanley (aka Port Stanley). Falkland Islands Museum.
One can't-miss spot is the Historic Dockyard Museum, where you can learn all about the history of the Falkland Islands. And we mean all of it! Featuring exhibits about maritime history, the natural environment, and past and present life for native Falklanders, this is an educational visit. Plus, the buildings that make up the museum complex are some of the oldest in Port Stanley, dating back to the 1840s.
While you're in Port Stanley, you will definitely want to visit the coast. Hop on a shuttle to Gypsy Cove and enjoy a long walk to spot penguins, dolphins, sea lions, and seabirds like albatrosses and petrels. If you're interested in learning more about the island's history, you can carry on walking to Ordnance Point, where a mounted gun from World War II still stands.
When you visit the Falkland Islands, odds are you'll end up at a pub or a fish and chip shop. Port Stanley is heavily influenced by British culture, and you'll find some tasty British fare here. But if you're looking for something unique, you have to enjoy a Daily Smoko. This term originally meant a smoke break in the British Merchant Navy but refers to afternoon tea in the Falkland Islands.
If you're looking for a souvenir to bring home, there are a few great things to pick up. For anyone who is interested in crafts or loves to knit, wool yarn is a great choice, or you can find some beautiful jewelry made from the islands' semi-precious pebbles. And if you're shopping for your kids, you have a lot of penguin-themed souvenirs to choose from.
